Emoetry, or...How Does It Feel to Feel?

When I was 17...I apparently had some pretty sappy taste in music.

I first heard the term "emo" in 1996 at my first high school marching band practice. After grilling each other on our tastes, two of my drumline-mates (who happened to be twin brothers and my future bandmates in my first band) brought me a stack of LPs and 7"s to digest and the following weekend invited me to my first "real" show.

I had to lie to my parents about where I was going, as the catering hall where the show was happened to be in a pretty bad neighborhood. Needless to say, it completely blew my mind. Although the only band I could remember playing that night was Miracle of 86 and a friends band - The Greyfind Sequence - I couldn't believe people barely older than I was at the time could book shows and put out their own records. However, the most impressive aspect of the whole experience was that instead of macho hardcore or knucklehead punk, they were singing about more introspective and personal topics. I spent the rest of that night in my bedroom listening to those records on headphones and reading zines by flashlight.

To that end, this post is a collection of songs from that era: before emo became glam pop-punk and makeup was for Kiss.
